Benson raft : ウィキペディア英語版
Benson raft

The Benson raft was a huge seagoing log raft designed to reliably transport millions of board feet of timber at one time through the open ocean.〔The Oregon History Project, (Benson Log Rafts )〕
Held together with giant logging chains, their cargo of logs and often finished lumber goods went from the outlet of the Columbia River in the United States into the Pacific Ocean and south 1100 miles to San Diego, California.〔Davis, p. 359〕 Once there the logs were sawn into lumber by the Benson Logging and Lumber Company for sale in Southern California.〔Williams, pp. 198, 199〕
==History==
While this practical transportation method was first used on the Pacific coast in 1906 by Simon Benson, a lumber baron of Portland, Oregon,〔Lind, p. 41 "King tyee of the Columbia River loggers was Simon Benson who invented the Benson raft. He was the first to use a seagoing log raft in 1906."〕 they were not the first rafts of their type. Some appeared on the Atlantic coast about 1883 and were used for several years until a very large one broke up and became a hazard to navigation.〔One writer, William George Jordan (1864–1928), noted that a lesson in ocean currents was learned from the catastrophe when logs from the breakup were found drifting all over the world. See William George Jordan, "(Failure As A Success )"〕 They were sometimes referred to as Leary rafts or Joggins rafts.〔("A Big Raft Comes By Sea" ), ''New York Times'', August 25, 1883〕 They seem also to have been employed on the Rhine River in 1888,〔("An Immense Timber Raft" ), ''New York Times'', September 23, 1888〕 and their use on the Pacific was contemplated as early as 1888.〔("To Handle Big Lumber Rafts" ), ''New York Times'', September 22, 1889〕
